Stephen King said, ā€œan opening line should invite the reader to begin the story. It should say: Listen. Come in here. You want to know about this.ā€ . With Charlie, the first line I actually wrote was ā€œto you,ā€ and the last one I wrote was ā€œthe earth trembles...ā€ . Why? Because I hadnā€™t quite established Charlieā€™s voice yet. I needed a way in to the character, and the ā€œto youā€ was the way in. . Charlie is romantic, artistic, and generous, and what better way to understand her than to give her the chance to say all she needs to say to the one person she loves the most? . Once I did that, ā€œCharlieā€ poured out of me. Donā€™t get me wrong, writing is still an intense labor; Charlie took almost an entire year of serious writing to before I finished it. And right before I sent it off to the first reader, I added that first line in the story. Fitting, once you understand. I was going to start a new book tonight but I got my manuscript back from my publisher @machetebooks So Iā€™ll be spending the next day or so reading it before signing off the the last version of ā€˜Charlie, Forever and Everā€™. . ā€˜Charlie, Forever and Everā€™ is a lush, dreamy, sometimes hellish journey of one womanā€™s life in New York during the early 1990ā€™s as she loses her grip on reality, all while working for one of the largest technology companies in the world, and being pursued by a sexually deviant socialite and her handsome, yet obsessive son. . Iā€™ve included some slides of films that hopefully convey the aesthetic of the story, including Donnie Darko, Eyes Wide Shut, and A Beautiful Mind. . The last slide is of Marilyn Monroe, who, like Charlie, is a tragic character in the center of her own life, being crushed through a machine whose only purpose is to squeeze every last morsel of talent, love, and generosity before being discarded. . In many ways, Charlie mirrors Marilyn: loving, generous, talented artists who only see what they want to see in the people around them, to their detriment.
